LOCAL bookmakers Boylesports are seeking substantial rent reductions across its 180 stores, according to a report in yesterday’s Sunday Business Post.

The company, which is controlled by businessman John Boyle, is agreeing to sign up to longer-term rental deals if its landlords agree to rent cuts.

Boylesports, whose headquarters are located at the Finnabair Industrial Estate on the Inner Relief Road, is examining its entire property portfolio and has a finance team prioritising the issue, as it seeks to rein in boom time property deals.

Boylesports have already secured a 70% reduction on a lease in Galway and 50% on a lease in Dublin.

A total of 165 of Boylesports’ 180 stores are rented. The company – which has stores in Dundalk, Ardee, Dunleer and Drogheda – recently announced revenues of €1 billion.

Dundalk-based equine clothing company Horseware is seeking investment of up to €5 million to help it boost its sales across Europe and America.

That’s according to a report in today’s Irish Times.

The newspaper also reports that company founder Tom MacGuinness has also hired accountancy firm Grant Thornton to help it undertake a strategic review of the business.

The Dromiskin man said the review could lead to a merger with another European distributor or even a sale of the business in “three to five years time.”

Horseware, which has an 80,000sq ft factory at the Finnabair Industrial Estate which employs about 120 staff, sells about €33 million worth of horse and rider clothing each year.

MacGuinness (62) told The Irish Times that all interested parties had been consulted about the decision to bring Grant Thornton on board and admitted that he was looking to approach investors with the hope of raising between €3-€5 million.

It is Tom’s hope to bring sales up to the €40m level but he admitted that if he achieved that he would have a decision to make: “Do we continue to grow it, or do well sell it?”

As many as 60 jobs could be under threat at Heinz in Dundalk as part of the company’s plan to cut 248 office jobs across its 2,600 workforce in Ireland and the UK.

Heinz revealed yesterday that it had developed a new “streamlined structure”, which could lead to job losses similar to the 600 lay offs that were implemented in the United States earlier this month.

The latest accounts for Heinz show that it currently employs 279 staff in Dundalk. However, 217 of these are in manufacturing, which will not be targeted for redundancies.

Only office workers, which includes admin and sales staff, are under threat.

Heinz has refused to comment on where the jobs will be lost if they go ahead with their current plans but trade union Unite has said that it has been assured that none of its members were affected. Despite this they are looking to meet with Heinz management for further reassurances.

Yesterday’s statement said that the proposals were subject to a consultation process with employees and their representatives.

Heinz first came to Dundalk in 1993 and are based at the Finnabair Industrial Estate. They have picked up numerous awards over the years, with the local factory dedicated to making frozen meals as opposed to other products the company are famed for such as their baked beans and range of sauces.

The Heinz factory in Dundalk

The Heinz factory in Dundalk has been sold to a Manchester-based food company.

The deal between the Authentic Food Company (TAFC) and Heinz includes a three-year arrangement for TAFC to manufacture the Weight Watchers meals developed by Heinz.

The two businesses will also work on developing new frozen products for the same range, with none of the firm’s 155 jobs thought to be affected by the takeover.

TAFC, which is family owned and managed, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

News of the sale emerged in December, with the deal now finalised for an undisclosed sum. The factory in the Finnabair Industrial Estate off the Inner Relief Road was opened in 1993 and is one of the biggest employers in the town.

Nik Basran, TAFC managing director, said the deal was an investment in the food manufacturing sector in Ireland.

“The strategic acquisition of this well invested site at Dundalk adds many new capabilities to our offer; including pasta, fish dishes and potato topped products,” Mr Basran said.

“The proposed sale offers a positive future for the facility and for the 155 people employed at the site.”

The terms of the sale have not been disclosed.

TAFC, which was set up in 1985, is family owned and headquartered in Manchester.

The company has 240 employees, with this deal bringing the number of employees to around 395. It said it was planning the expansion of its food service and retail business both in the UK and Europe.

“We have invested heavily in our sites and people in the UK over the last five years and this is very much more of the same, albeit on a much bigger scale, to ensure we are equipped to respond to evolving customer needs,” added Mr Basran.

Local girl Debbie Mullen is loving life after losing over two stone in 10 weeks with Slender Choice Academy. Indeed, she has been so influenced by her weight loss that she is setting up her own class.

Debbie was going on her first family holiday with her hubby and two young boys last summer but like alot of women wasn’t feeling bikini ready and couldn’t get as excited about the holiday as she wanted to. After talking to her long time friend Karen Daly, owner of Slender Choice, Debbie decided to set herself a brave goal and lose her weight in time for summer.

Karen Daly has been adopted by Dundalk as she has been working as a weight loss expert since 2009, helping hundreds of local slimmer’s reach their dream weight. Debbie joined the academy last summer and over 10 weeks managed to lose two stone and hit her goal, feeling incredibly proud as she hopped on the plane bound for Portugal.

Debbie attributes her success to learning what to eat and how to cook it and found the motivation and support from the academy second to none. Debbie has been so excited about her transformation that she will now lead the company’s expansion into the weight loss market.

Debbie will open her own Academy session on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in the Slender Choice Academy in Finnabair Industrial Estate. She said: “I’m so delighted to be part of this exciting brand and for me Slender Choice is about fun, learning and motivation – no foods are banned, it’s all about personal choice and learning skills to help you lose weight and more importantly keep it off forever.

“I have lost weight in the past however without the right skills and knowledge it is virtually impossible to keep it off forever – Slender Choice Academy is different, now I don’t diet, I simply eat according to my goals and I am confident that I will be a healthy weight forever and cannot wait to help others achieve the same!! Join me each Wednesday to find out more.”
